Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar is one of the more popular resorts for Spanish tourists on the Costa del Sol and is the beach resort of Vélez-Málaga, capital of the Axarquia region. There are unsubstantiated claims that Torre del Mar once formed part of an ancient Greek settlement known as Manake which is believed to have been destroyed by the Carthaginians, prior to the arrival of the Romans. These days the town is better known for its four kilometres of sandy beaches lined with restaurants, bars and apartments.

One of the resort's most pleasant features is the extended esplanade which follows the coast to reach the Marina of Caleta de Vélez which has over 200 berths and offers sailing and a variety of other watersports. With a fishing port alongside comes an array of lively cafes and restaurants providing a good place to idle the time away, as well as enjoy excellent seafood. Due to this both Torre del Mar and Caleta boast some of the best fish restaurants on the whole coastline.

There are a range of properties in Torre del Mar from residential townhouses and exclusive new villas in the higher areas on Viñamar, to holiday apartments on the lower beachside areas. Either way, it’s the relaxed atmosphere and typically Spanish town feeling of Torre del Mar that attracts foreign purchasers.

Caleta de Velez offers highly individual villas on established urbanisations near to the Marina and some of the best choice of new townhouses and apartments located on the golf course area of Baviera Golf, set just slightly further back from the Marina area.

The bustling market town of Vélez-Málaga lies 5 km inland from Torre del Mar, surrounded by subtropical vegetation. Often simply referred to as Vélez, it is the centre of an agricultural region known for its strawberries and vineyards, which produce the muscatel grapes from which the famous Málaga wines are made. The town is a centre for the processing of olive oil and sugarcane and ceramics feature among other industries. If its tiles for your new kitchen or bathroom you need then Velez is the place to go.
The town was important in both Roman times, under the name of Menoba, and Moorish when as Ballix-Malaca (Fortress of Málaga) it had an important role in subduing what has always been a turbulent region. The oldest part of the town, known as Arrabal de San Sebastián, is a picturesque area of narrow streets and if you are looking for a quaint Andalusian townhouse in a bustling Spanish town, then look no further. You will also come across attractive mansions built during the 16th and 17th centuries. One which was recently restored, Palacio del Marqués de Beniel hosts the International Summer School of the Axarquía covering all aspects of culture including flamenco concerts.

Inland villages are some of the prettiest in the region. These include those of Arenas and Comares which offer incredible views of rolling hills down to the coast and dramatic mountains rising up behind them. Beautiful country houses with their own olive and almonds groves surround the villages and simple whitewashed townhouses can be found in the villages themselves.
