Competa Long known as the pearl of the Axarquía is the town of Cómpeta. Situated 49 kilometres from Malaga, 18 kilometres inland from Torrox Costa and at an altitude of 636 metres above sea level, the town boasts stunning views of mountains, countryside and Mediterranean. The area is irrigated by numerous springs and streams from the surrounding mountains and is best known throughout Spain for its locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet. One of the most popular annual fiestas here is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine) on the 15th August which features a programme of flamenco and sevillana music and dance, plus a demonstration of 'la pisa de la uva' (treading on grapes).
Competa is self sufficient and thriving, providing its three thousand inhabitants with a municipal market and a fresh daily supply of meat, fish and vegetables. It is a charming flower bedecked old town which has retained its original Moorish layout and has lots of interesting nooks and crannies, with a good balance of shops, bars and restaurants.
Many villages in the area, although smaller than Competa are of a similar style and nature. They attract buyers seeking beautiful and peaceful countryside and friendly Andalucian hospitality. Building your own villa in the Campo here is still very much a possibility, as are the numerous opportunities for investing in or renovating a typical village townhouse. Either way, good value for money and a much more relaxed lifestyle are the real benefits of purchasing in this region.
Canillas de Albaida on the outskirts of Competa is also a village surrounded by high mountains. Its colourful landscape of pine and oak trees provides a great habitat for eagles, mountain goats and wild boars, whilst in the river valleys, grapes, olives and tropical fruits are grown. The village itself has Moorish origins from the 13th century. Its Arabic name meant 'The White One' and the Islamic past is reflected in the layout of the streets and squares, and in the use of terraces for cultivation.
Sedella is one of the 31 towns and villages that make up the Ruta Mudejar, in the Axarquia. It is a typical Moorish town, filled with examples of Mudejar architecture, with narrow and winding streets that carry the stamp of the Moorish village. Its altitude provides wonderful views over the beautiful countryside around the village, and from here one can see the Sierra Tejeda Mountains, the Mountains of Bentomiz and on clear days, the Atlas Mountains across the Mediterranean. It is a peaceful place, far from the hustle and bustle of the cities and bigger towns, and ideal for those looking for a peaceful location.
Half way up between Algarrobo Costa and Competa sits Sayalonga, a beautiful white village surrounded by magnificent views, offering opportunities for buyers to purchase their own villas at a fraction of the prices quoted at the coast! Sayalonga has maintained an old world peacefulness and charm where farmers ride their mules and bullocks plough the fields. Yet it is only ten minutes drive to the beaches, fifteen minutes to the nearest marina and golf course and forty-five minutes to Malaga airport.
